Friday Playlist 04.01.13

Friday, 4 January 2013

I cut my teeth in the writing and blogging world by writing about music - reviewing gigs and albums, interviewing bands, and it's still something I love to do. Music is a big part of my life, and this year, I want to bring a bit more of that to my blog. I have quite a varied taste - my roots lie in rock and metal type music, with pop-punk being my ultimate 'genre', although I like a lot of different things, from chart pop to hardcore. Basically, anything that catches my ear! I'm going to try and stick to doing a 'songs of the week' type post as regularly as possible, and hopefully share some of the music that I'm loving with you guys! They might not always be recent songs, but it'll generally be a mixture of new, 'new to me', and maybe the odd all-time favourite!

If you have any suggestions for things I should be listening to, let me know in a comment - I love discovering new music!

We Are The Ocean // Young Heart

I used to be a huge WATO fan, and travelled around quite a bit to see them, but since Dan (who did the rougher vocals) left the band, I haven't had as much interest as one of my favourite things was how Liam and Dan's vocals worked together and bounced off each other. However, the boys posted this on their Facebook page and I thought I'd have a listen, and was actually really impressed, and it's made me actually get round to giving their most recent album, Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow, a listen.

Green Day // Stray Heart

This one's been knocking around for a while, but I've only just got round to listening to it! Compared to some of their more recent stuff, this is simple pop-punk at it's finest, and much more similar to their earlier stuff, which I've always preferred. I've also just realised two out of the three songs on this week's list have the word 'heart' in them! /slow.

Gavin Mikhail // Skinny Love

I recently discovered Gavin Mikhail, who does a lot of piano-based covers (as well as his own songs), and this is definitely one of my favourites of his. I'm not a huge fan of the original (it's okay, but doesn't really captivate me much!) but what he does with is is absolutely stunning. His voice manages to really put across delicacies and subtleties within songs, and the piano backing is absolutely gorgeous. Check out his other covers on his YouTube too, I also recommend Don't You Worry Child (which isn't on his YouTube, but on Spotify!), Somebody That I Used To Know and Titanium.

What have you been listening to this week?

  1. I love discovering new music, so yay for these posts! I've never heard of We Are The Ocean before, but they seem to be amazing! I definitely need to check out the rest of their songs.

  2. Music is also something I'm hoping to bring into my own blog this year, and I'm on the hunt for other bloggers doing the same. Me and you seem to have similar tastes in music as pop-punk is also my main genre but I still listen to loads of others so I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this feature.
